Barrett-Theron to officiate WRWC warm-up games
April 12, 2017

Top female referee Aimee Barrett-Theron will officiate two Women’s Rugby World Cup warm-up matches in New Zealand in June, as she prepares to take the whistle at the international spectacle in Ireland in August.

Barrett-Theron was appointed as the referee for the matches between Australia and England at the Jerry Collins Stadium in Porirua on 9 June, and Australia and Canada at Smallbone Park in Rotorua on 17 June.

She will also serve as an assistant referee in the matches between Canada and England on 13 June and New Zealand and Australia on 13 June at Rugby Park in Christchurch.

Barrett-Theron is the only South African referee on the World Cup panel which consists of 14 match officials in total – nine referees and five assistant referees.

Australia’s Amy Perrett and Graham Cooper, Tim Baker from Hong Kong, Ireland’s Joy Neville and Sean Gallagher, Sara Cox and Claire Hodnett from England, and Spain’s Alhambra Nievas were the other referees named on the World Cup panel.

“It is an honour to be named on the Women’s Rugby World Cup referee panel and I am very excited about the opportunity,” said Barrett-Theron.

“I officiated my first Test match in December and was then appointed to referee the opening match of the Women’s Six Nations, so it is fantastic to receive the chance to officiate the warm-up matches in New Zealand.

“The World Cup is a little less than four months away, so this will serve as fantastic preparation for the tournament.”

Before turning her attention to the Women’s World Cup warm-up games, however, she has another important assignment as she is on the referee panel for the for Japan leg of the HSBC Women’s Sevens World Series in Kitakyushu on 22 and 23 April.
