SA Rugby Sevens Academy in Vina del Mar quarters

The SA Rugby Sevens Academy on Saturday qualified for the Cup quarterfinals at the Sudamericarugby 7s in Vina del Mar in Chile on Saturday, despite a defeat in pool play.

They face Germany on Sunday in the knock-out match for the title.

The SA side opened with a 29-0 win over Paraguay and then dropped a 17-7 result against Ireland before a 14-14 draw against Brazil in pool play and SA Rugby Sevens Academy coach, Marius Schoeman, admitted that their performances on Day One were under par.

"We did not play well at all, especially in those last two matches. The guys lacked energy and zip and there are no excuses for the performances. Personally, I think the long trip are catching up with the guys now, especially since they had to play a lot due to the injuries sustained last week. Also, we have three guys who finished school last month with one of them only joining us this week and a player trying out sevens for the first time, so I have some sympathy for the system errors that occurred."

Schoeman insisted that they still have every chance to win a second title in as many weeks, having clinched the first of the two South American tournaments in Punta del Este last weekend.

"We are good enough, we showed that last weekend. We play Germany in the quarters, who are here with a big squad of players and they will be fit and strong. They also play good structures. So it will be a challenge, but we are still in the race. We need a big performance today."
