The SA Select Women Sevens will face the Maple Leafs in the gold medal match in the Elite Women’s division of the Vancouver Rugby Festival in the early hours of Sunday morning at BC Place - the home of the HSBC Canada Sevens - despite going down in two of their three matches in the second round overnight.
The team, coached by Renfred Dazel, kicked off the second day with a morale-boosting 52-0 victory against Canada’s Stars Rugby Women at the UBC Rugby fields, but they suffered a 31-0 defeat against the Maple Leafs in their second match.
Their efforts to finish the day on a strong note were unsuccessful, as they went down 26-10 against the USA Falcons.
The results for the SA Select Women placed them in second place on the log, despite finishing the opening two days tied with the USA Falcons on 27 points, with their favourable points differential giving them an edge.
They will face the Maple Leafs, who have won all six of their matches so far, in the gold medal match on Sunday morning at 02h30 (SA time).
The USA Falcons and Stars Rugby Women, meanwhile, will meet in the bronze medal match.
