SA Rugby to host women’s assessment camp
March 13, 2018
Twelve national women’s players, including locks Nolusindiso Booi and Celeste Adonis, are amongst a group of 46 players who has been invited to a two-day women’s 15s camp in Cape Town from Wednesday, 21 March, to Friday, 23 March, with an eye on the international season.

The camp marks the first of four this year, and will serve the purpose of testing the players’ fitness and conditioning levels, and to have a look at how a few former Under-20 players perform.

Six players who participated in the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup in France – Adonis, Booi, Tayla Kinsey, Fundiswa Plaatjie, Thantaswa Macingwana and Asithandile Ntoyanto – and six Springbok Women’s Sevens players – Kirsten Conrad, Nosiphiwo Goda, Unathi Mali, Rights Mkhari, Zinhle Ndawonde and Eloise Webb – were named in the squad.

Twenty-five squad members – including the 12 capped international players – toured with the SA Select Women’s 15s team to London in October last year where they faced the British Army and England Academy teams. Booi captained the team on tour.

“The players received an off-season training programme in December, and as part of this they had access to Virgin Active gyms to boost their fitness and strength, so the main objective of this camp is to measure their progress,” said SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux.

“This camp will also allow us to test some of the former Under-20 players and to see how they fit in to the senior structures.

“We re-introduced women’s international 15s rugby last year, and we are currently working on arranging possible matches for this season, so it is important that the preparation continues behind the scenes so that the players are ready physically by the time they take to the field.”

The testing will be conducted at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Newlands, while the field training sessions will be hosted at City Park Stadium in Athlone.
