Women’s race going down to the wire

The scramble for Final berths in the A and B Sections of the Women’s Interprovincial competition will come down to the wire in the final pool round in two weeks after most the sides in the running to finish in the top two on the standings in their respective sections registered vital victories.

In the A Section, log-leaders Border overcame a tightly-fought first half against KZN to secure a 27-10 win, which allowed them to retain their place at the top of the log table as they eye their sixth successive home final. Sine Shozi was in solid form for the team as she scored two of their five tries and kicked a conversion to contribute 12 points.

Defending Women’s Interprovincial champions, Western Province, meanwhile, powered their way to a 101-0 victory against Free State with the side running in a staggering 18 tries. Courtney Groener was the star of the match with four tries and a conversion for a personal total of 22 points, while Alana-Lee Horne scored a hat-trick and two conversions for 19 points.

Eastern Province also remained in the race as they defeated the Blue Bulls 26-7 in Pretoria, which left them in third place on the standing only two points behind Western Province. Siphosethu Tshingana made a solid contribution as she kicked three penalty goals and a conversion to keep the scoreboard ticking.

In the B Section, SWD, the Xerox Golden Lions and Boland registered their second round of victories in as many games.

The Golden Lions registered the biggest win as they thumped the Pumas 75-19 in Witbank, with their impressive attack earning them a rewarding 13 tries. Refilwe Ramahlo scored a hat-trick, while Piwokuhle Nyanda, Lerato Mokhojoe and Bongi Nhleko earned braces.

In the other games, Boland overpowered the Griffons 55-5 in Welkom, the Leopards defeated Limpopo 29-12 in Potchefstroom and SWD beat Griquas 29-15.
