The Xerox Golden Lions scored four tries enroute to beating the Tafel Lager Griquas 34-17 (halftime 24-0) in their Currie Cup match at Griqua Park in Kimberley on Friday evening.

The visitors used the perfect early Spring weather to run hard and fast at the Griquas with the men from Johannesburg making many inroads into the Peacock Blues' half.

The Golden Lions' attacking intent paid off in the 13th minute when flank Cyle Brink received quick ball on the wing to score in the corner.

The home team continued to be put on the backfoot and when they did get possession, they struggled to break down the Golden Lions' wall of men.

The Golden Lions were so strong on attack that they scored shortly after outside centre Harold Vorster was shown a yellow card. Flank Kwagga Smith peeled off the back of a dominant lineout drive to dot down for a try of his own in the 22nd minute.

The Golden Lions did well to keep the Griquas out with a man short and they kept on attacking, much to the frustration of the home team.

A moment of brillance by scrumhalf Marco Jansen van Vuren saw the youngster catching the Griquas by surprise as he took a quick tap before darting through the defence to score.

Fullback Jaco van der Walt landed a penalty goal at the death of the first half to add to his three conversions and give the Golden Lions a healthy 24-0 lead at the break.

The opening 20 minutes of the second half proved to be a ding-dong battle as both teams threw everything at each other but neither team were able to score any points.

The Griquas were galvanised by the yellow card to Smith in the 59th minute which allowed replacement utility back Kyle Steyn to reach out and score after receiving the ball from a dominant scrum.

Wing AJ Coertzen followed up Steyn's efforts a few minutes later as the Griquas' captain displayed a clean set of heels to dance his way over the tryline.

Replacement flyhalf George Whitehead made it a seven point ball game with 12 minutes left on the clock but the visitors replied four minutes later as Van der Walt kicked a penalty goal of his own.

Inside centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg was rewarded for his strong running throughout the match as he collected a chip kick to score the bonus point try on the stroke of fulltime.

Van der Walt converted to hand the Golden Lions a hard fought but well deserved 34-17 win against the Griquas.
