Clinical Kavaliers beat Bulldogs
September 09, 2017

The rampant Boland Kavaliers sealed an impressive 42-3 (halftime 21-3) bonus point win over the Border Bulldogs in their Currie Cup First Division encounter at the BCM Stadium in East London on Saturday night.

The Kavaliers were clinical throughout the much, taking almost every chance offered to them as they ran in six unanswered tries, while the Bulldogs could only manage a single penalty early in the first half.

It was a superb forward effort that laid the platform for the massive win, with five of the six tries scored by tight five players including a brace to both lock Marlyn Williams and hooker Clemen Lewis.

The first half started with a scrappy opening 10 minutes as both teams tried to gain an early foothold in the game, but a slew of handling errors from both teams led to a stop start affair.

A couple of penalties to the Bulldogs then allowed them to get out of their half and into Boland's, where they earned a penalty for offside, just over the 10m line straight in front of the uprights.

Flyhalf Xolela Payi went for poles and confidently struck it over to put the Bulldogs 3-0 up after 11 minutes.

However that was as good as it got for the home side as the Kavaliers struck back almost immediately, working their way into the Bulldogs 22m from the kick off, earning a penalty straight in front and taking a quick tap, which allowed Williams to pick up the ball from a ruck and smash over next to the right hand upright.

Fullback Divan Nel enjoyed a faultless night with the boot and popped over the easy conversion as the Kavaliers hit the front 7-3.

In the 21st minute Boland were back in Border's 22m, and from a line out they attacked, going through the phases before scrum half Vian van der Watt received an offload right on the try line and dived over under the sticks for a converted score.

Six minutes later Boland were in again, this time an unstoppable rolling maul from a second line out on the Bulldogs 5m ended with Lewis dotting down in the left hand corner.

Nel slotted the tricky conversion putting the Kavaliers 21-3 up and looking as if they would run away with the game, however the Bulldogs then enjoyed their best period of the half, without seriously threatening the visitors line, and the sides went into the break with no further score.

The second half then started with the Bulldogs enjoying their best spell of the game, coming close to scoring a number of times in the first 10 minutes, but mistakes and handling errors at crucial times allowed Boland to clear their lines.

The Kavaliers first foray into Border's 22m in the second half then saw them come away with points, as they received a penalty for not rolling away, kicked to touch for a 5m line out, set the maul and then with it disintegrating just before the line, Lewis came straight through the middle and powered over the line for his second towards the left hand corner in the 49th minute.

With Border putting up a bit of a fight, they kept the Kavaliers scoreless for the next 18 minutes, however the final 13 minutes saw two more converted tries scored.

Williams first rounded off a patient build up, before a Bulldogs knock on in their own half allowed Boland to counter, ending with replacement hooker Francois Esterhuyzen running 25 metres to score under the poles untouched to round off a dominant performance from the visitors.
