Griffons U20s flex muscles in opening round

The Down Touch Griffons scored an impressive 67-31 win over the Boland Kavaliers in the opening round of the SA Rugby under-20 Championship in Wellington on Saturday, with Border also winning away from home against the Limpopo Blue Bulls. The Steval Pumas and Hino Valke, meanwhile, played to an exciting 45-all draw in Middelburg.

The SA Rugby under-20 Championship kicked off in dramatic fashion, with no less than 36 tries scored in the three matches.

The Down Touch Griffons proved the most productive in the try-scoring stakes. They scored 10 tries as they outplayed Boland with a strong second half showing at Boland Stadium. Leading 22-12 at the break, the visitors used their backline to good effect.

Border travelled to Pretoria to face the Limpopo Blue Bulls at LC de Villiers Stadium and won 34-25 thanks to a strong first half performance. The visitors held a 24-10 lead at the break. Border winger Lwazi Komani scored the first hat-trick of the tournament.

The match between Steval Pumas and Hino Valke yielded no less than 12 tries in a tight match that finished 45-all. The Valke had a slender 19-17 lead in the match played at Middelburg High School.
