Griffons, Valke soar, as Boland U20s register first win
June 26, 2017
The Down Touch Griffons on Saturday returned to their winning ways in round four of the SA Rugby U20 Championship as the Hino Valke outplayed Border and the Boland Cavaliers registered their first win in the competition.

The Down Touch Griffons bounced back from their first defeat of the season with intent as they racked up an impressive eight tries, with a double by centre Luciano Jones, against the Steval Pumas at the HT Pelatona Projects Stadium for a 58-22 victory. The win marked their third score of 50 points or more in the opening four rounds.

The Welkom side backed up this fine attacking form with solid defence, which limited the Steval Pumas to only one try, while the balance of their points were scored by flyhalf Juandre Nel, who slotted over five penalty goals and a conversion.

The Valke registered their second victory of the competition as they outplayed Border 29-7 at the BCM Stadium with Brandon Collins scoring two of the team’s four tries, while the hosts managed only a converted try. The victory left them only three points behind log-leaders, the Down Touch Griffons on the log table.

The Boland Cavaliers staged a dramatic comeback from 15-6 down against the Limpopo Blue Bulls to emerge 25-20 victors at the Boland Stadium. The match proved to be a tight affair as both teams scored three tries, but two penalty goals by the hosts to only one by the Limpopo side proved to be the difference on the scoreboard.

Round five will commence on Saturday, with Tafel Lager Griquas hosting the Down Touch Griffons in Kimberley, the Steval Pumas taking on the Boland Cavaliers at the Mbombela Stadium and the Limpopo Blue Bulls meeting the SWD Eagles at Loftus Versfeld.
