High-scoring weekend in U20 Championship
July 04, 2017
It was a weekend of high scores in the SA Rugby U20 Championship as the Down Touch Griffons, Boland Cavaliers and SWD registered victories with scores in the 40’s in an exciting fifth round.

The Down Touch Griffons secured their fourth win in five matches as they bounced back from a 23-19 halftime deficit to defeat the Tafel Lager Griquas 41-38 in Kimberley. This allowed them to retain the top spot on the log table.

Down Touch Griffons winger Brandon Swart was the standout performer as he scored three of the team’s five tries, while flyhalf Luan James converted four of them. In return, the hosts scored only four tries, while centre Pieter Snyman kicked three conversions and four penalty goals for a personal tally of 18 points.

In Middelburg, meanwhile, a strong first-half by the Boland Cavaliers in which they scored 29 points set them up for their 43-39 victory against the Steval Pumas. A total of 11 tries were scored in the match, with the Boland scoring six of them – of which Barry Adonis and Jodi Koul each scored two each.

SWD also produced an impressive display against the Limpopo Blue Bulls in Pretoria in which they crossed the tryline seven times en route to their 43-29 victory.

The first half was closely fought as they entered the break only two points ahead on scoreboard, but they found their rhythm in the second half and limited the Limpopo side to only 12 points after the break, which allowed them to secure the win.

The next round of matches will kick off on Friday with the Boland Cavaliers hosting the Tafel Lager Griquas at the Boland Stadium, and on Saturday, SWD takes on the Steval Pumas at Outeniqua Park and the Down Touch Griffons meet the Hino Valke at the HT Pelatona Projects Stadium in Welkom.
