Bok Women’s Sevens shift focus at Potch camp
August 07, 2017
The Springbok Women’s Sevens will have their sights set firmly on the Rugby Africa Sevens in Tunisia and qualifying for the Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco in the next few days at a training camp in Potchefstroom.

The Rugby Africa Sevens, which will be hosted in Monastir, Tunisia, on 16 and 17 September will double up as the Qualifier for the World Cup, which will be played in July 2018.

Springbok Women’s Sevens coach Renfred Dazel and his team arrived in Potchefstroom on Monday and will return to their base in Stellenbosch on Saturday night after playing training matches against a combined team from the Pukke (University of Potchefstroom) and Leopards on Friday and Saturday respectively.

The Bok Women’s Sevens will enter the African Sevens showpiece as the defending champions, while their impressive track record in the tournament has seen them win the title in back-to-back seasons from 2013 to 2016, in 2011 and from 2006 to 2008.

“The Rugby Africa Sevens is a vital tournament for us, so we need to be well prepared, and this camp will play an important role in that sense,” said Dazel.

“It not only offers the players a change of scenery, but the matches will also assist us in sharpening up our match fitness, as our last tournament was the HSBC Women’s World Series Qualifier in Hong Kong in April.

“Every team will have the same goal in Tunisia with the added incentive of qualifying for the World Cup, so we need to be ready mentally and physically to make our presence felt. We have been working hard toward this cause in the last few months in Stellenbosch, but this camp will allow us to step up our preparations.”

Dazel and his team will depart for the tournament on Wednesday 13, September.
