Blitzboks knocked out of Cape Town 7s by NZ
December 10, 2017
The Blitzboks lost their Cup semi-final by 19-12 to New Zealand after they beat Fiji earlier on Sunday by 31-26 in a tense quarter-final of the HSBC Cape Town Sevens.

It was a massively disappointing result for the massive crowd in the Cape Town Stadium as the Kiwis outscored the home team by three tries to two.

The Blitzboks scored two tries in the first half - by Philip Snyman and Cecil Afrika - to one by New Zealand to lead by 12-7 at the break.

But the Kiwis were too strong in the second half and crossed for two more tries to seal their place in the Cup final - their first in Cape Town.

Earlier, the Blitzboks beat Fiji by 31-26 in a tense Cup quarter-final to progress to the semis of the HSBC Cape Town Sevens.

The match started in controversial fashion when the Fijians were awarded a penalty try for a high tackle on the South Africans' tryline - Seabelo Senatla was sent to the sin bin. They crossed again shortly thereafter to take a 14-0 lead.

But the Blitzboks hit back with a brilliant Werner Kok try in the corner to close the gap to 14-5.

Fiji added another try to stretch their lead again, before Justin Geduld gave the Blitzboks some hope with a try just before the break. The half-time score was 21-12.

The match continued to see-saw, but the Blitzboks found their rhythm and although Fiji scored again, the home team's Senatla (two) and Kwagga Smith scored crucial second half tries which saw the South Africans through to the Cup semi-finals.
