Lions and Sharks shine in junior championships

It was a successful weekend for the Xerox Golden Lions and Cell C Sharks in the SA Rugby junior provincial championships as their U19 and U21 teams produced the goods to ensure a solid round for the unions.

In the SA Rugby U21 Championship, the Xerox Golden Lions continued their winning form as they defeated the Vodacom Blue Bulls 27-20 in a close clash in Pretoria. The win marked their third victory in as many games, with the side out-scoring the hosts three tries to two.

In Potchefstroom, a hat-trick by the Cell C Sharks’ Courtney Winnaar and braces by Ilunga Mukendi and Mfundo Ndhlovu steered the team to a rewarding 69-21 victory against the Leopards, while three penalty goals by DHL Western Province cancelled out an extra try by Toyota Free State to guide them to 20-27 victory in Cape Town.

These results ensured that the Durbanites and Capetonians also remained unbeaten.

In the SA Rugby U19 Championship, the Cell C Sharks were in superb form once again as they thumped the Leopards 90-7 for their eighth win of the season, with Fezokuhle Mbatha scoring four of their 12 tries, while the Xerox Golden Lions held their nerve in a tight tussle against the Vodacom Blue Bulls in Pretoria, with two penalty goals proving vital in their 11-10 victory.

In the other match, Toyota Free State out-scored DHL Western Province five tries to four for a morale-boosting 33-24 away-win.

The Griffons U20’s, meanwhile, continued to stamp their authority they as completely overpowered Griquas for a memorable 85-3 win in Welkom in what marked their fifth successive win, while SWD edged Limpopo 16-12 in George with two penalty goals nudging them to their first win of the season.
