The Aucklanders made a superb start and led 27-14 at halftime, no doubt helped by a very lethargic first-half display by the DHL Stormers that was characterised by poor options and missed tackles. The visitors were 20-0 up inside 21 minutes in front of a stunned DHL Newlands faithful.
Joe Marchant (wing) was the outstanding player for the side from Auckland, scoring two tries and clinching the Vodacom Player of the Match award in the process. Dalton Papalii (looseforward) was the other try scorer for the visitors while Otere Black (flyhalf) succeeded with the three conversions and four penalty goals.
Juarno Augustus (No 8) and Sergeal Petersen (left wing) scored tries for the home side, both of which were converted by Damian Willemse (flyhalf).
The DHL Stormers were off the pace in this game while the Blues made the best of their attacking opportunities to register their second win in as many weeks.
The Capetonians’ penalty count was double that of the the visitors (12-6), while they paid dearly for their high rate of missed tackles.
The DHL Stormers have a by next weekend after five consecutive matches in South Africa, while the Blues will leave South Africa unbeaten after two excellent wins, which included a last-minute victory over the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria last weekend.
