A scrumhalf with a massive passion for the game, Davis represented the Transvaal Independent Rugby Football Union (TIRFU), from where he went on to gain national colours under the auspices of SARU.

After his playing days, until his death, Davis remained involved in club rugby with his beloved Raiders in Johannesburg.

“Any member of the South African rugby family who passes away, is a big loss for us,” said Mr Alexander.

“Mustapha was known as a scrumhalf with crisp service and was also very fast, which meant he could also play on the wing.

“He was cool, calm and collected on the field, and was also very strong defensively, known for putting down players much bigger than him.

“The fact that he did not get the chance to display his talent on the international stage had very much to do with the political situation at the time in our country rather than his ability.

“Our prayers and thoughts are with his immediate family and friends in this time of bereavement, and we pray that Almighty Allah grant him Jannat Firdaus (meaning heavenly abode).”
