The six players all took part in Rugby World Cup in New Zealand last month and were not considered when interim Springbok Women’s Sevens coach, Renfred Dazel, invited his first squad of the 2022/23 season to the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport last week.

With them now rested and ready, Dazel wasted no time in including the six Springbok Women’s players in his training squad for the Dubai event. He will also guide the team to the HSBC Cape Town Sevens a week later.

Ayanda Malinga, who missed the trip to New Zealand after sustaining an ankle injury at Rugby World Cup Sevens in September, has also been invited, along with 13 players that were involved in last week’s camp.

Dazel said he was pleased to have an experienced core of players back and explained the decision to invite Cilliers to camp was made after he watched her in action in New Zealand.

“Nadine, Sizo, Eloise, Simamkele and Rights have been regulars to the squad, and I liked what I saw in Jakkie,” said Dazel.

“I wanted to invite her to the first camp already, where the focus was on the fundamentals, but she was still under the rest period protocol. I was impressed by a number of players we called into camp last week and feel they will benefit from working with the more experienced players.

“We need to make sure this camp gets the side ready for the Dubai tournament and with only 12 players going, everybody will have to work hard to make sure they are in that team.”

South Africa’s Pool A opponents in the International Invitational tournament are France Development, Kenya Lionesses and Tunisia.

The invited players are: Liske Lategan, Marlize de Bruin, Kemisetso Baloyi, Nadine Roos, Rights Mkhari, Jakkie Cilliers (all Blue Bulls), Sizophila Solontsi, Sisanda Ndlela (Sharks), Leandri Lamprecht (Leopards), Mathrin Simmers, Eloise Webb, Asisipho Plaatjies, Snenhlanhla Shozi (all Border), Butlebethu Sonamzi, Shaunique Alexander (Eastern Province), Donelle Snyders, Felicia Jacobs, Simamkele Namba (all WP), Ratidzo Gurenjena (Golden Lions), Ayanda Malinga (Boland).
