This included five tries in a match against Thailand – a new try-scoring record for the Springbok Women's Sevens team in a World Rugby sanctioned match – while her total tally also topped the individual stats for the weekend as South Africa won both of the Challenger Series tournaments to qualify for next season's HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
Ayanda Malinga, who was the leading SA try scorer in the first tournament with five tries, added another five five-pointers in week two, for a total of 10 tries in eleven matches. The Bok Women speedster was the only other player to score a hat-trick for her team over the two weeks of play.
Roos already accumulated 68 points in 23 matches in the World Series, where the South African side only enjoyed invitational status only for the last couple of seasons.
She played off the bench in the first tournament after only joining the side from her Japanese club five days prior to kick-off, but once let loose by coach Renfred Dazel in the second week, there was no stopping Roos.
Her 78 points included 10 tries and 14 conversions. She was only outscored in the try-scoring stakes by Belgium's Cecile Blondiau, who crossed for 12 five-pointers, half of the European side’s total tally during the tournament.
Roos and team scored 26 tries, only outdone by China on the weekend, who scored 29. Belgium scored third most tries (24) followed by Poland (18).
Overall, Blondiau topped the scoring stakes with 95 points over the two weekend, with Roos a close second on 94. The Belgian player scored 19 tries, followed by Anezka-Marta Sladkova (Czechia, 13), Roos (12), Liu Xiaqian (China, 11) and Malinga (10).
China scored the most tries over the two weeks with 52, followed by South Africa (44) and Belgium (42).
The South Africans’ improvement from the first to the second tournaments was clear to see. They improved their try tally from 18 to 26 in week two and conceded only three tries in the second tournament, compared to six in week one.
