According to reports, the 24-year-old fullback died from a punctured lung after he was legally tackled during a game in Montagu on Saturday.

“It is with profound sadness that we learned of the tragic passing of Ashwill Sauls, a dedicated and talented rugby player from the Robertson Rangers,” said Mr Alexander.

“Ashwill’s untimely death following a fatal tackle during a friendly match against Montagu RFC has left the entire rugby community in shock and mourning.

“At just 24 years old, Ashwill had been a vital part of the Rangers for the past five years, showcasing not only his skill on the field but also his sportsmanship and passion for the game. His loss is deeply felt by his teammates, coaches, and all who knew him.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ashwill’s family, friends, and the Robertson Rangers during this incredibly difficult time. We extend our heartfelt condolences and support to everyone affected by this tragedy.
