Born on 7 April 1995, Maqholo – who hailed from Middledrift in the Eastern Cape where she attended Josi Marela High – played seven Tests for South Africa between 2018 and 2019.

A versatile back who played fullback and flyhalf, Maqholo rose through the ranks and toured to the UK with the SA U20 team in 2013, while and also won the Women’s Premier Division with Western Province between 2017 and 2019.

Maqholo had her first taste of senior rugby at national level at a training camp in 2016, and in 2017 she was part of the SA Women’s Select team, where she played with a host of current Springboks, including national captain Nolusindiso Booi.

“On behalf of the South African Rugby Union and the entire rugby family, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Vuyo Maqholo – an extraordinary woman whose fierce talent and passion for the sport were felt across every try line she crossed,” said Mr Alexander.

“As a proud representative of both the Springbok Women and Western Province, Vuyo embodied the spirit of unity, resilience and excellence. Her contributions went beyond the field, serving as a beacon of inspiration to young players and a cherished teammate whose warmth and determination uplifted everyone around her.

“Her legacy lives on in every jersey worn with pride and in every young girl who dreams of rising through the ranks of South African rugby. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and all those whose lives she touched.

“May she rest in peace and may her memory continue to guide and strengthen our rugby family.”
